FOCUS: Energy Efficiency

OVERVIEW: Replicates the natural blue-sky light spectrum in indoor fixtures to improve human circadian health and productivity without increasing energy use

Zero Energy: We have been able to demonstrate benefits to mood, focus, and alertness of all building occupants with an ultra low energy density of 0.4 W/ft 2 using our SkyView Tile. The benefits of our lighting technology have been demonstrated in peer reviewed studies with Harvard and the Department of Defense. Moreover, we have proven that these are a 1-for-1 replacement for existing lighting systems, with no added cost or complexity. We have had successful installations in corporate offices, schools and athletic centers. Near-term success would look like improved occupant health and performance. SkyView Tile has also demonstrated sustainability via Declare red listing.

Most lighting was designed for vision — not for human health. But science has discovered a dedicated blue-sky sensor in our eyes that controls mood, focus, and energy. When we spend our days under traditional LEDs, we're starving that sensor, contributing to decreased productivity and even psychiatric disorders. BIOS, as a NASA spin-off, has been dedicated to solving this problem since its 2014 inception, and now our SkyView technology has cracked the code. Using patented Blue Sky Gradient Technology, our fixtures replicate the exact spectrum, direction, and intensity your body craves from a natural blue-sky day — meeting the new IES recommended practices without compromising energy, cost, or complexity. The results speak for themselves: field studies at a Fortune 500 company and SFO's 24-hour operations center showed a 33% rise in mood, 55% improvement in focus, and 44% boost in alertness.

BIOS Lighting is Promising for California

Zero Added Energy Cost Removes Title 24's Biggest Wellness Lighting Barrier. Research shows that meeting WELL v2 and IES circadian lighting guidelines with conventional tunable LEDs can increase energy use by 10–100%, but SkyView delivers the full 250+ melanopic EDI threshold required by WELL, IES RP-46, and the GSA P100 standard at only 0.4 W/ft² — meaning California buildings can achieve circadian compliance with no energy penalty and no Title 24 conflict.

California's WELL and LEED Certification Pipeline Is a Direct Sales Channel. California leads the US in WELL and LEED-certified commercial floor space, and WELL's circadian lighting design requirement mandates a maintained average of at least 250 equivalent melanopic lux on the vertical plane at 1.2 meters above finished floor — the exact threshold SkyView is engineered to meet, making it a turnkey compliance solution for the hundreds of California projects pursuing WELL certification annually.

California's K–12 and University Market Is Massive and Primed. California has over 10,000 public schools and 145+ college campuses, and SkyView's peer-reviewed Harvard and DoD studies demonstrating improved mood, focus, and alertness directly address California's student performance and mental health crisis, a growing legislative priority, while the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), California's own green school standard, explicitly incorporates circadian-effective lighting criteria that SkyView meets.

Harvard Case Study Gives California Proof. The field study at Harvard showing a 33% rise in mood, 55% improvement in focus, and 44% boost in alertness is validation that resonates directly with employers who manage operations and face growing worker wellness obligations under California's stringent labor regulations.

Declare Red List Certification Aligns with CALGreen and Living Building Challenge Requirements. SkyView's Declare red list compliance — certifying it contains no hazardous materials — aligns with California's increasingly rigorous materials transparency requirements under CALGreen and the Living Building Challenge, giving architects and developers specifying California projects a low-embodied-harm lighting option that satisfies both human health and material health criteria simultaneously.

California's Return-to-Office Mandate and Office Retrofit Wave Create Immediate Demand. California state agencies have issued return-to-office directives for state workers, and the broader California commercial office market is undergoing significant retrofit activity as employers compete for talent in one of the world's most expensive labor markets — SkyView's 1-for-1 replacement for existing troffer fixtures with no added infrastructure cost makes it a straightforward specification upgrade for the interior designers and facility managers executing these retrofits across millions of square feet of California office space.
